What to look for in a job offer

Getting a job offer can be very exciting. Finally, all the hard work you put into to land a job has come into fruition. Most call center companies hire applicants under the one-day processing scheme so getting an immediate job offer may not allow you time to consult others before signing it.

For a newbie agent, here are a few things you need to think over before accepting any offers you might get.

Firstly, review the basic salary. Average basic starting salary among call center agents is P14,000-P16,000. If you're offered P18,000, that's already considered a very good offer industry wise. If you have at least 6 months related job experience, you may get a higher offer. Offers for day shift work on the other hand, are less, at P9,000 to P11,000.

Secondly, if you're offered graveyard work, check for night differential. Night differential is extra pay your company is obliged to pay you, as required by the law, from 10 pm until 6 in the morning. The labor code  requires all companies to pay at least 10% of a worker's hourly wage but some companies offer double at 20%. The bigger the night differential, the bigger the take home pay. Let's say your hourly wage is P80 per hour, if your night differential is 10%, you get extra P8 per hour. If your night diff is 20%, your extra pay is  P16 per hour.

Thirdly, check for the appraisal period. The appraisal period indicates when you get appraised for salary increase. Some companies offer appraisal after a year and on a yearly basis, but there are companies who offer appraisal as early as your third month in the company and on every 3 or 6 months duration. The earlier the appraisal period therefore the earlier the salary increase.

Fourthly, review the regularization period. Some companies offer regularization after your sixth month but other companies do provide regularization as early as the third month. Regularization will get you benefits including SSS, Philhealth, Pag-ibig, paid sick leave, paid vacation leave, 13th month pay, etc.

Fifthly, look out for the company benefits offered. Does your job offer include rice allowance, transportation allowance, hazard pay or Christmas bonus? Does the company offer health cards upon hiring or is it offered only after regularization? Is there a sign-on bonus?

Lastly, check for overtime pay. How much is the company willing to pay you for overtime work rendered, or is the company willing to pay you for OT at all? If the company requires you to work even on nonworking holidays, is it explicitly stated on the contract that you will you get double pay?

What to expect when applying for a call center

Applying for a job can be very daunting for first-time job seekers. The stress is more pronounced because new applicants don't know what to expect in a job interview. While there is no substitute for experience, you can arm yourself with more confidence by familiarizing yourself on what to expect when applying as a call center agent.

Recruitment sites will be brimming with people. There will be plenty of applicants like you. For recruiters it is easy to spot the newbies from those who already have experience. Most new applicants are timid and formal, whereas experienced agents are more confident and relaxed. Job experience is not the main and only basis for hiring recruits however so don't feel intimidated if you feel you don't have much going on your resume. Be prepared to wait long hours though as there will only be a limited number of recruiters to go over a very long list of applicants. You will be asked to fill up a form which includes information about your educational background and job experience, your previous employers, references, your social security and BIR number, and affix your signature that all information declared is true.

When your name is first called, expect to be ushered into a room where you will have your first interview. You will be asked general questions about yourself, your educational background as well as your experience. The recruiter will be assessing your communication skills so make sure to give a good impression.

If you pass the first interview, the next step will be to take the computer test. The computer test will assess your comprehension, verbal and listening skills. To be more specific, you will be asked to read specific sentences on the screen, repeat sentences and paragraphs played from an audio file, as well as answer questions related to grammar. The computer test will also check if you can type fast enough and if you can navigate your way on a computer with a keyboard and a mouse.

After you pass the computer test, you will have your final interview. Questions asked are similar to the initial interview, but you are expected to expound more. Reading an article about answering the 50 most asked interview questions would be a good idea as most recruiters really just ask the basic questions like "why do you want to work in a call center?", "how do you see yourself five years from now?", "tell me about your job experience" etc. Pageant or philosophical questions rarely happen so don't waste your time researching or thinking of ways to answer them. Recruiters are there to assess if you have what it takes to work as an agent, so focus on your communication skills and sell yourself by being professional and pleasant.

If you passed the final interview, you will be asked to come back for your job offer. Some companies will call you back after a week or two, but most will sign you up same day as you applied. Now if you don't get hired, don't despair and give up. The first time may not always be a charm but keep applying as there are several call centers out there and each have different "profile" requirements. What one call center may reject, another may find potential in. So keep persevering!

Call center job as an alternative career

The prospect of unemployment is one of the biggest fears of many new graduates. With so much competition and limited job openings in traditional industries, many job seekers are forced to look for other employment opportunities. The most popular alternative career among many Filipino workers is to work as a call center agent.

A call center job is a good career alternative for job seekers. The job is relatively simple although not necessarily easy. The only requirements are good English-speaking skills, basic computer skills, plus the capacity to work during graveyard shift. Day shifts are also available although there are far less openings and pay is considerably lower than working the night shift.

For those who are interested in working in this type of industry but are unsure of what the job entails, a call center agent provides support service to a specific company or product. Accounts vary from banking, airlines, hotel and reservations, telecommunications and many more.

Samples of job responsibilities when handling accounts related to banking are answering customer questions about products, selling credits cards to clients, and resolving disputes with charges on bank statements. Telecommunication accounts involve handling billing disputes, price plan changes, provision of technical support to users and more. Airline accounts and hotel reservations, on the other hand, considered relatively simpler accounts, entail accepting payments for tickets and making reservations for callers.

Work can be either be inbound or outbound. As the term suggests, inbound agents receive incoming calls from people, whereas outbound agents place outgoing calls. Most outbound calls are sales-related and can be more challenging, as agents will have to sell their company's products, although financially it is considered more rewarding as you get commission for every sale you make.

If you're one of the thousands who have been unable to land their dream job, why not try applying as a call center agent and take advantage of the opportunities that the industry currently offers. Who knows this could be the right job for you.
